Ambroxol HCl is a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory conditions associated with excessive mucus production. It helps in breaking down mucus, making it easier to expel from the respiratory tract, thereby improving breathing.

Indications

Ambroxol HCl is indicated for the treatment of conditions where there is excess mucus, such as: -Acute and chronic bronchitis -Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) -Asthma with mucus production -Respiratory infections (like pneumonia) -Cystic fibrosis


Dosage

-Adults: 30 mg three times daily, or as prescribed by a doctor. -Children (6-12 years): 15 mg two to three times daily. -Children (under 6 years): 7.5 mg two to three times daily, depending on medical advice. Dosage may vary depending on the form of medication (syrup, tablet, or lozenge) and the specific patient's condition.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity or allergy to Ambroxol or any of its components. -Patients with severe liver or kidney impairment. -Use with caution during the first trimester of pregnancy.


Special Precautions

-Should be used with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcers. -Use with caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment. -Ensure proper hydration to optimize mucus breakdown. -Avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor.


Side Effects

-Nausea -Vomiting -Diarrhea -Stomach pain -Allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, or swelling -In rare cases, anaphylactic reactions


Drug Interactions

-Ambroxol may enhance the penetration of antibiotics like amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, and doxycycline into bronchial secretions. -Use cautiously with other cough suppressants, as these may interfere with the mucolytic effect of Ambroxol.
