Anthraquinone

Senna is obtained from leaves & pod of certain Cassia sp, while Cascara sagrada is the powdered bark of the buck-thron tree. Anthraquinone glycosides thus obtained are unabsorbed in the small intestine; they are passed to the colon where bacteria liberate theactive anthropo form; which either acts locally or is absorbed in circulation.

Indications

Atonic constipation. Bowel evacuation for radiological examination.


Contra-Indications

Intestinal obstruction, spastic constipation, electrolyte imbalance, lactation.


Special Precautions

Lowest effective dosage should be employed & prolonged indiscriminate use to be avoided. Abdominal surgery. Pregnancy & children below 6 yrs.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting skin rashes, fixed drug eruption, Regular use (4-12 mths) causes colonic atony and mucosal pigmentation (melanosis).
