Azelaic Acid

It is a straight chain saturated dicarboxylic acid occuring in rancid oleic acid, having cytotoxic effect on malignant or hyperactive melanocytes with antibacterial an anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications

Acne vulgaris, malignant melanoma, hyperpigmentation.


Dosage

Adult more than 12 years of age 20% topically 12 hourly.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to azelaic acid.


Special Precautions

Should not be applied to eyes, mouth or other mucous membrane, Use with caution in pregnancy and lactation.


Side Effects

Redness, itching, burning, skin irritation, contact dermatitis, hypopigmentation, and dryness.
