Albuterol is a beta-2 adrenergic agonist used as a bronchodilator to manage and prevent asthma symptoms and other conditions with reversible obstructive airway disease.

Indications

-Asthma -Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) -Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction -Chronic bronchitis


Dosage

-Adults: 2 puffs (90 mcg per puff) every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum 12 puffs per day. -Children (over 4 years): 2 puffs every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum 12 puffs per day.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to albuterol or any component of the formulation -Severe hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic amines


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes mellitus. Monitor patients with a history of seizures or hypokalemia. Caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women.


Side Effects

-Common: Tremor, nervousness, headache, dizziness, and dry mouth. -Serious: Tachycardia, palpitations, chest pain, and severe allergic reactions.


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other beta-agonists, leading to additive effects. -Caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants due to increased risk of cardiovascular side effects. -May increase the effects of other sympathomimetic drugs.
