Calcium Carbonate

Calcium Carbonate is a calcium supplement used to prevent or treat calcium deficiency. It is commonly used to treat or prevent conditions such as osteoporosis and to provide additional calcium in the diet.

Indications

-Calcium deficiency -Osteoporosis prevention and treatment -Antacid for relieving heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach

Dosage

-For Calcium Deficiency: Typically, 500-1000 mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses. -For Osteoporosis: 1000-1500 mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses. -As an Antacid: 1-2 tablets (chewed) as needed, usually not more than 4 times a day.

Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate -Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood) -Renal impairment or kidney stones -Certain conditions causing calcium metabolism disorders

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of kidney stones or renal impairment. -Monitor calcium levels regularly to avoid hypercalcemia. -Consult with a healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

-Constipation -Gas or bloating -Nausea or upset stomach -Rare: Hypercalcemia, kidney stones, or allergic reactions

Drug Interactions

-May interact with certain medications such as tetracycline antibiotics, bisphosphonates, and some anti-seizure drugs. -May reduce the absorption of other medications such as levothyroxine.
