Cefpirome

Cefpirome

It is a fourth generation cephalosporin. It is bactericidal and it acts by binding at plasma binding proteins and disrupting the bacterial cell wall.

Indications

It is used in treatment of resistant enterococcal and streptococcal infections


Dosage

Adults: 1-2 g twice daily depending on the severity of infection. Dose to be modified in cases of impaired renal function.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Cross sensitivity to penicillin. Monitor renal functions in case of concomitant administration of loop diuretics or aminoglycosides. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution


Side Effects

Nausea, vomitting, diarrhoea, pseudomembranous colitis. Increase in liver enzymes. Eosinophilia. Thrombocytopenia. Taste disturbance after injection.


Drug Interactions

Aminoglycosides: Monitor renal functions.
