Cephalexin

It is bactericidal which is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Indications

Respiratory tract infections, E.N.T. Urinary tract, Gynaecological and obstetric infections. Gonorrhoea (When Penicillin is unsuitable). Skin Soft tissue bone and dental infections.

Dosage

Adults: 1-4 gm daily in equally divided doses 6 hrly. Children: 5-15 yrs:- 25-50 mg/kg body wt. daily in divided doses.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to cephalo-sporins.

Special Precautions

It is well tolerated by patients allergic to penicillin, but cross-reaction has been encountered rarely. Paediatrics: Safe. Pregnancy: Use with caution during early months. Lactation:The drug passes into breast milk. elderly: renal impairment may occur.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, Reversible neutropenia. Drug rashes.

Drug Interactions

Concurrent treatment with aminoglycosides or potent diuretics (Frusemide ethacrynic acid and piretanide) may adversely affect renal function.
