Clomifene Citrate

Clomifene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is commonly used in the treatment of female infertility. It works by stimulating ovulation in women who have difficulty conceiving due to irregular ovulation or anovulation.

Indications

-Female infertility associated with anovulation or oligo-ovulation. -Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with anovulatory cycles. -Unexplained infertility.


Dosage

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to clomifene or any of its components. -Ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to PCOS. -Abnormal vaginal bleeding of undetermined origin. -Liver disease. -Pregnancy.


Special Precautions

-Monitoring: Regular monitoring of ovarian function, including ultrasound examinations, is essential to minimize the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. -Multiple pregnancies: Clomifene increases the risk of multiple pregnancies. Patients should be informed about this risk and monitored accordingly. -Visual disturbances: Patients experiencing visual symptoms such as blurring or spots should discontinue the medication and seek immediate medical attention.


Side Effects

-Hot flashes. -Abdominal discomfort. -Nausea. -Breast tenderness. -Headache. -Visual disturbances.


Drug Interactions

-Avoid concurrent use with other medications that may affect liver function. -Caution is advised when used concomitantly with other ovulation-inducing agents.
