Codeine Phosphate, Chlorpheniramine Maleate

A combination medication used to treat symptoms of allergies, colds, and respiratory infections. Codeine is a cough suppressant that works on the brain to reduce the urge to cough, while Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine that alleviates allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itching.

Indications

-Relief of cough and cold symptoms -Treatment of allergic rhinitis and upper respiratory allergies -Management of symptoms related to common cold, hay fever, or other breathing illnesses


Dosage

-Adults: 10-20 mg of Codeine Phosphate and 2-4 mg of Chlorpheniramine Maleate every 4 to 6 hours, as needed. -Children: Doses are adjusted based on age and weight. Consult a healthcare provider. -Maximum daily dose should not exceed recommended limits.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Codeine, Chlorpheniramine, or any other component of the medication -Respiratory depression, severe asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) -Patients under 12 years of age -Use during breastfeeding


Special Precautions

-Avoid use in patients with a history of substance abuse or addiction -Caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment -Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment -May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery


Side Effects

-Drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth -Nausea, vomiting, headache -Respiratory depression (in overdose or sensitive individuals) -Urinary retention


Drug Interactions

-CNS depressants such as alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers may increase the risk of severe drowsiness or respiratory depression -MAO inhibitors or drugs affecting serotonin levels can interact adversely -Other antihistamines or opioid medications
