Colistin Sulphate is an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, particularly in cases where other antibiotics have failed. It is especially effective against multidrug-resistant strains.

Indications

-Treatment of infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. -Used in severe infections when other treatments are ineffective or contraindicated.


Dosage

-Adults: 2.5 to 5 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 to 12 hours. -Children: Dose adjustment based on weight and severity of infection. Consult a healthcare provider for precise dosing.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Colistin or any of its components. -Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or pre-existing neurological disorders.


Special Precautions

-Monitor renal function regularly during treatment. -Caution in patients with neuromuscular disorders as Colistin may exacerbate muscle weakness.


Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. -Severe: Nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity (e.g., dizziness, numbness, tingling), allergic reactions.


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other nephrotoxic drugs, increasing the risk of renal damage. - Caution is advised when used concurrently with neuromuscular blockers.
