Dexchlorpheniramine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, itching eyes, and sneezing. It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Indications

-Allergic rhinitis -Urticaria (hives) -Common cold symptoms -Conjunctivitis (due to allergies) -Skin reactions (due to insect bites/stings)


Dosage

-Adults and children 12 years and older: 2 mg every 4-6 hours (maximum 12 mg per day) -Children 6-12 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours (maximum 6 mg per day) -Children under 6 years: As directed by a physician


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to dexchlorpheniramine or any of its components -Narrow-angle glaucoma -Severe hypertension or coronary artery disease -Concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other respiratory conditions -May cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery -Use with caution in elderly patients, who may be more sensitive to the effects -Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding


Side Effects

-Drowsiness -Dry mouth, nose, or throat -Dizziness -Blurred vision -Constipation -Difficulty urinating


Drug Interactions

-MAO inhibitors (may increase the risk of side effects) -Alcohol and CNS depressants (may increase drowsiness) -Anticholinergic drugs (may increase the risk of side effects)
