Dexrabeprazole is a medication belonging to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class, specifically an enantiomer of rabeprazole. It is used primarily for the treatment of acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and dyspepsia. It is the Re-isomer of racemate rabeprazole that is more effective than the recemate and s-rabeprazole.

Indications

-Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) -Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis -Treatment of peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection -Symptomatic relief of dyspepsia and heartburn associated with acid reflux


Dosage

The dosage of Dexrabeprazole varies depending on the condition being treated: -GERD: Typically 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. -Peptic Ulcers: Usually 20 mg once daily for up to 4-8 weeks, often in combination with antibiotics for H. pylori eradication. -Maintenance Therapy: Lower doses may be prescribed for long-term management.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to dexrabeprazole or any components of the formulation -Co-administration with medications like atazanavir or nelfinavir due to potential drug interactions


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with liver impairment or severe renal dysfunction -Monitor magnesium levels in patients on prolonged therapy -Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound hypersecretion of gastric acid


Side Effects

-Common side effects may include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea -Rare but serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea


Drug Interactions

-Dexrabeprazole may interact with medications such as ketoconazole, digoxin, and warfarin -Consult with a healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medications while taking dexrabeprazole
