Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: Transforming India's Healthcare Ecosystem
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, informed the Rajya Sabha about the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), a pioneering initiative aimed at revolutionizing India's healthcare ecosystem. The mission seeks to create a robust digital platform to enable interoperability of health data, ensuring the creation of longitudinal electronic health records for every citizen.
ABDM aims to build the foundational digital infrastructure required to support an integrated healthcare system, enhancing transparency, security, and accessibility. Its core components include the creation of key registries such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR), Health Facility Registry (HFR), and a comprehensive Drug Registry.
Highlighting its achievements, the minister shared that, as of December 10, 2024, over 71.16 crore ABHA accounts have been created. Additionally, 3.54 lakh health facilities have been registered under HFR, 5.37 lakh healthcare professionals have been enrolled in the HPR, and nearly 46 crore health records have been linked to ABHA.
The mission is voluntary, with a strong focus on public awareness and engagement. Multiple campaigns, capacity-building programs, and integration with public events such as trade fairs and marathons have been launched to promote the adoption of ABHA. Publicity materials in healthcare facilities and collaborations with States/UTs have further amplified outreach efforts.
Integration of ABDM with major government healthcare schemes such as PM-JAY, reproductive child health programs, TB Nikshay, and NPCDCS has significantly boosted adoption. Private healthcare providers have also embraced ABHA-integrated solutions, driving the digitization of health records and services.
The government is committed to strengthening digital healthcare infrastructure through ABDM by fostering capacity building and developing frameworks that align with the evolving needs of the healthcare ecosystem. This transformative mission underscores the vision of creating a citizen-centric, accessible, and technology-driven healthcare system in India.
