Dextromethorphan Hbr, Pseudoephedrine Hcl, Guaiphenesin

This medication is a combination of three active ingredients: dextromethorphan HBr, pseudoephedrine HCl, and guaifenesin. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant, pseudoephedrine is a decongestant, and guaifenesin is an expectorant. Together, they work to relieve coughs and congestion associated with respiratory tract infections and allergies.

Indications

-Relief of cough due to colds, flu, or allergies -Relief of nasal congestion -Relief of chest congestion


Dosage

-Adults and children 12 years and older: Take 1 or 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours. -Children 6 to 12 years old: Take 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. -Do not use in children under 6 years old without consulting a doctor.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication -Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping such treatment -Severe hypertension -Severe coronary artery disease -Severe cardiac arrhythmias -Hyperthyroidism -Closed-angle glaucoma -Prostatic hypertrophy -Bladder neck obstruction


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, liver or kidney impairment, asthma, or respiratory conditions. -Use cautiously in the elderly population. -Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. -Use with caution in patients with a history of drug abuse. -Do not exceed recommended dosage.


Side Effects

-Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, nervousness, or trouble sleeping. -Serious side effects such as fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, difficulty urinating, or seizures should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately.


Drug Interactions

-MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, or other drugs that increase blood pressure may potentiate the effects of pseudoephedrine. -Concurrent use of alcohol or other central nervous system depressants may increase the risk of drowsiness or dizziness. -Use caution when combining with other medications containing acetaminophen or other decongestants, as excessive dosages may lead to toxicity.
