Diphenhydramine Hcl, Codeine Phosphate, Ephedrine Hcl, Ammonium Chloride

This medication is a combination drug containing diphenhydramine HCl (an antihistamine), codeine phosphate (an opioid analgesic), ephedrine HCl (a sympathomimetic agent), and ammonium chloride (an expectorant). It is formulated to provide relief from symptoms associated with respiratory conditions such as cough, cold, and congestion.

Indications

-Symptomatic relief of cough associated with respiratory tract infections. -Relief of nasal congestion. -Temporary relief of mild to moderate pain.


Dosage

Dosage should be individualized based on the patient's age, weight, and severity of symptoms. Adults: Take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed for cough and congestion. Maximum dosage should not exceed 8 tablets per day. Children: Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the child's weight and age.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication. -Severe respiratory depression. -Asthma attack. -Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping such therapy.


Special Precautions

-Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). -Use with caution in patients with a history of drug abuse or addiction. -Avoid use in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment. -Ephedrine-containing products should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes.

Common side effects may include: -Drowsiness -Dizziness -Nausea -Vomiting -Constipation -Dry mouth -Blurred vision -Urinary retention -Hypersensitivity reactions


Drug Interactions

-Concomitant use with other central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other opioids, may potentiate CNS depression. -MAOIs may potentiate the effects of ephedrine and codeine, leading to hypertensive crisis or serotonin syndrome. -Anticholinergic drugs may enhance the anticholinergic effects of diphenhydramine.
