Diphenhydramine Hcl, Phenylephrine Hcl, Ammonium Chloride, Sodium Citrate

This medication is a combination of diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an antihistamine), phenylephrine hydrochloride (a decongestant), ammonium chloride (an expectorant), and sodium citrate (an alkalinizing agent). It is formulated to relieve symptoms associated with upper respiratory conditions such as nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, and irritation of the throat.

Indications

This medication is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with the common cold, allergies, hay fever, sinusitis, and other upper respiratory tract infections.


Dosage

-Adults and children over 12 years: Take 2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours. -Children 6-12 years: Take 1 tablet every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. -Not recommended for children under 6 years old.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients -Severe hypertension -Severe coronary artery disease -Use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) within the past 14 days


Special Precautions

-Patients with asthma, glaucoma, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, prostate enlargement, or liver or kidney impairment should use caution and consult a healthcare professional before using this medication. -Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication. -Use with caution in elderly patients and those with a history of urinary retention.


Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, or difficulty urinating. Serious side effects such as allergic reactions, rapid heartbeat, or difficulty breathing should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately.


Drug Interactions

-MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, or other medications that increase blood pressure may potentiate the effects of phenylephrine, leading to hypertensive crisis. -CNS depressants, such as alcohol or sedatives, may enhance the sedative effects of diphenhydramine. -Anticholinergic drugs may increase the risk of side effects such as dry mouth and urinary retention when used concomitantly.
