DOCUSATES (Dioctyl sulfo succinate)

It is an anionic detergent, softens the stools by net water accumulation in the intestinal lumen. It emulsifies the colonic contents.

Indications

Habitual geriatric, obstetric & paediatric constipation where laxatives/straining are to be avoided (early pregnancy, recent myocardial infarction, severe hypertension, abdominal hernia, ost-operative cases) Piles fissures & bed ridden patients.

Dosage

50-500 mg daily in divided doses.

Special Precautions

By a detergent action, it can disrupt the mucosal barrier and enhance the absorption of many non-absorbable drugs e.g. liquid paraffin-should not be combined with it. Paediatrics: Dose to be reduced. Pregnancy: Use with caution. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.

Side Effects

Cramps & abdominal pain, nausea. Hepatotoxicity is feared on prolonged use.

Drug Interactions

Enhances absorption of laxatives.
