ERGOTAMINE

It should be used in patients not benefited by simple analgesics.If given early in attack, relief is often dramatic and lower doses suffice.It is a potent vasoconstrictor & also has alpha- adrenergic blocking action.It is used in the acute management of migraine & related vascular headaches but not for prophylaxis.

Indications

Migraine,cluster headache & vascular headaches.


Dosage

1mg is given at half hour intervals till relief is obtained.Max:6 mg.


Contra-Indications

Coronary, peripheral or occlusive vascular disease.Severe hypertension ,coronary artery diseaseImpaired hepatic or renal funtions. Pregnancy, lactation.Septic conditions.


Special Precautions

Donot exceed the indicated dose. Paediatrics: Not usually prescribed. Pregnancy: Not usually prescribed. Lactation: Not recommended. Eldery: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting,G.I disturbances, pallor, coldness & tingling of the extremities.


Drug Interactions

Smking, beta blockers, and methylsergide increases risk of Vascular occulsion. Simultaneous use of Oral contraceptivesincrease risk of thrombosis. Erythromycin increases plasma concentration of Ergotamine.
