Ferric Carboxymaltose
Ferric Carboxymaltose is an intravenous iron preparation used to treat iron deficiency anemia in patients who are unable to take oral iron supplements or when oral supplementation is ineffective. It provides rapid iron replenishment and improves hemoglobin levels.-Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults and children (? 14 years) when oral iron preparations are not sufficient. -Anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or other chronic conditions. -For patients undergoing major surgery or with gastrointestinal malabsorption.
Adults (including elderly): The typical dose varies based on the severity of iron deficiency and hemoglobin levels. --Generally, a dose of 500 mg to 1000 mg (in a single infusion) is given based on individual needs, with a maximum dose up to 1000 mg. -Children (? 14 years): The dose is typically adjusted based on body weight and iron deficiency levels.
-Hypersensitivity to ferric carboxymaltose or any of its components. -Iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis). -Anemia not caused by iron deficiency.
Monitor for hypersensitivity reactions during the infusion. Caution in patients with a history of asthma, eczema, or other allergic conditions. -Monitor iron levels, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease or those receiving frequent infusions. -Pregnancy: Only use when clearly needed, and after careful assessment of risks and benefits. -Lactation: Consult healthcare providers before use during breastfeeding.
-Common: Pain at the injection site, headache, dizziness, nausea, hypertension, rash. -Severe: Anaphylactic reactions, iron overload, fever, chest pain, allergic reactions.
-ACE inhibitors and other medications affecting iron metabolism or causing potential allergic reactions may interact. -Antacids or phosphate binders might reduce the absorption of iron when taken concurrently. -Other iron supplements should not be combined with Ferric Carboxymaltose to avoid iron overload.
