Fexofenadine with Montelukast
Fexofenadine and Montelukast are medications commonly used in combination to manage allergic rhinitis and asthma. Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body, which can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that helps decrease inflammation and bronchoconstriction, commonly associated with asthma and allergies. This combination therapy is indicated for: -Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) -Perennial allergic rhinitis -Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives) -Asthma management
-Adults and children over 12 years: Typically, the dosage is one tablet (containing 180 mg of Fexofenadine and 10 mg of Montelukast) taken once daily in the evening. -Children aged 6-12 years: The dosage might be adjusted based on specific medical advice, often lower than the adult dose. -Children under 6 years: Use is generally not recommended without specific pediatric consultation.
-Hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine, Montelukast, or any component of the formulation. -Severe hepatic impairment (for Montelukast).
-Hepatic impairment: Montelukast is metabolized in the liver, so caution is advised in patients with liver issues. -Renal impairment: Adjustments may be necessary since Fexofenadine is excreted via the kidneys. -Pregnancy and lactation: Should only be used if the potential benefits justify the potential risk to the fetus or infant. -Elderly patients: Use with caution due to possible reduced hepatic, renal, or cardiac function.
-Common side effects: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal disturbances. -Serious side effects: Mood changes, hallucinations, flu-like symptoms, and signs of liver problems (such as jaundice or dark urine). -Rare side effects: Severe allergic reactions including rash, itching/swelling, and trouble breathing.
-Ketoconazole and Erythromycin: Can increase the plasma concentration of Fexofenadine. -Phenobarbital and Rifampin: Can decrease the effectiveness of Montelukast. -Alcohol and CNS depressants: Concurrent use can enhance CNS depression. -Other antihistamines or leukotriene inhibitors: Use with caution to avoid additive effects or interactions.
