Flufenamic Acid

Flufenamic Acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that primarily works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), which are involved in the production of prostaglandins responsible for inflammation, pain, and fever. It is commonly used to treat pain and inflammation associated with various conditions.

Indications

-Acute pain management, including pain from injury or surgery. -Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). -Chronic inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. -Acute gout attacks. -Post-operative pain and inflammation.


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, the dose is 50-100 mg every 6-8 hours, not exceeding 300 mg per day. -Children: Dosage must be adjusted according to body weight and medical advice. -It is recommended to take the medication after meals to reduce gastric irritation.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Flufenamic acid or other NSAIDs. -History of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers. -Severe renal or hepatic impairment. -Pregnancy, particularly during the third trimester. -Children under 12 years (unless prescribed by a doctor).


Special Precautions

-Use cautiously in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., peptic ulcers or bleeding disorders). -Monitor kidney and liver function in prolonged use. -Caution in elderly patients due to the increased risk of renal toxicity and gastrointestinal side effects. -Not recommended for use in patients with cardiovascular conditions without consultation.


Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, dizziness. -Serious: Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, kidney damage, liver dysfunction, allergic reactions (e.g., rashes, swelling, difficulty breathing).
