Galantamine

Acetylcholine helps the brain to work properly. Galantamine is a acetylcholinesterase inhibitors i.e., it slows the breakdown of acetylcholine.

Indications

Indicated to treat the symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. It will not cure Alzheimer's disease and willnot stop the disease from getting worse. However, it can improve thinking ability in some patients. Dementia syndrome.


Dosage

Administered orally with meals. Alzheimer's disease: Starting dose is 4mg twice daily. The maximum dose is 12mg twice daily. The dose is increased gradually as tolerated. Dementia Syndrome: 8-12mg twice daily.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to galantamine. Severe kidney and liver problem. Pregnancy. Breast feeding mothers. Children.


Special Precautions

Use with caution in patients with Asthma (or history of) or lung disease, epilepsy or history of seizures, slow and irregular heart beat, stomach ucler, urinary tract blockage or difficult urination. Take plenty of fluids during treatment. Dose adjustment is needed in liver and kidney problems


Side Effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, anorexia, and weight loss are the bothersome side effects. Less common side effects are chest pain or discomfort, and shortness of breath.


Drug Interactions

Specially aspirin, medicines for appetite control, and herbal medicines or supplements.
