Gestodene
Gestodene is a synthetic progestin used in various hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is commonly combined with an estrogen, such as ethinylestradiol, to prevent pregnancy. Gestodene works by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation.-Contraception (as part of combined oral contraceptives) -Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in menopausal women -Treatment of irregular menstrual cycles and endometriosis (in some cases)
-For contraception: Typically taken as a combination tablet containing 0.075 mg of Gestodene and 30-40 µg of ethinylestradiol, once daily for 21 days followed by a 7-day break. -For HRT: Dosage may vary, typically as part of a combination regimen depending on the individual’s needs and health status.
-Pregnancy -Known or suspected breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers -Severe liver disease or active liver tumors -Unexplained vaginal bleeding -History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE)
-Use with caution in women with a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or liver problems. -Not recommended during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk. -Monitoring is advised for patients who smoke, particularly if they are over 35 years old. -May affect the metabolism of certain drugs and increase the risk of thromboembolism.
-Headaches -Nausea -Breast tenderness -Mood changes or depression -Weight gain or fluid retention -Skin reactions such as rash or acne -Changes in menstrual bleeding pattern
-Anticonvulsants (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine) may decrease the effectiveness of Gestodene. -Antibiotics like rifampicin can also reduce its efficacy. -Use with caution with drugs that may affect liver enzymes or anticoagulants.
