INTERFERONS

They are low molecular weight glycoproteins produced by host cells in response to a viral infection. They have a nonspecific inhibitory effect on viral replication at a stage soon after entry into the cell. A wide variety of RNA and DNA viruses are affected.

Indications

Viral Infections.


Contra-Indications

Severe allergies, active tuberculosis.


Special Precautions

Exerts highest activity when given before infection. Paediatrics: Not usually used. Pregnancy: Safety not established. Lactation: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, digestive disturbances, fever, alopecia, lethargy/depression.


Drug Interactions

Effect of theophylline may be enhanced, sedative effect on the nervous system.
