LEVAMISOLE and TETRAMISOLE

LEVAMISOLE and TETRAMISOLE

Both are active against many nematodes, but use is restricted to ascariasis and ancyclostomiasis. It stimulates the ganglia in worms: causes tonic paralysis.

Indications

Roundworms, hookworms and mixed worm infestations.


Dosage

150 mg single dose. Children 50 mg single dose. In case of severe hookworm infestation: repeat dose after 1 to 7 days.


Contra-Indications

Simultaneous administration of lipophilic agents, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloro-ethylene, chloroform, ether.


Side Effects

Nausea, abdominal pain, giddiness, fatigue, drowsiness or insominia. Alcohol induces flushing, nausea, palpitation and headache.


Drug Interactions

Reduces methotrexate toxicity. Enhances cytotoxic effect of fluorouracil. Avoid combination with folic acid antagonist.
