Lubiprostone

Lubiprostone is a medication used to treat chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). It works by increasing the secretion of chloride-rich fluid in the intestines, which helps to improve bowel movements and alleviate constipation.

Indications

-Chronic idiopathic constipation -Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) -Opioid-induced constipation (in certain cases)

Dosage

-Chronic Idiopathic Constipation: Typically, 24 mcg orally twice daily. -Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation: Usually, 8 mcg orally twice daily. -Opioid-Induced Constipation: The dosage may vary based on the opioid regimen and patient needs.

Contra-Indications

-Known or suspected bowel obstruction -Severe diarrhea or a history of bowel obstruction -Hypersensitivity to Lubiprostone or any of its components

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of bowel obstruction or severe diarrhea. -Monitor for symptoms of severe abdominal pain or discomfort. -Not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary; use caution in lactating women.

Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache. -Less Common: Vomiting, flatulence, bloating. -Rare: Severe allergic reactions, severe abdominal cramping.

Drug Interactions

-May interact with drugs that affect gastrointestinal motility. -Caution should be exercised when used with other medications that can cause gastrointestinal side effects. -No significant interactions with most other drugs, but always consult with a healthcare provider.
