Magnesium hydroxide

Magnesium Hydroxide is an inorganic compound commonly used as an antacid and laxative. It helps neutralize stomach acid and relieve constipation by drawing water into the intestines.

Indications

-Antacid: Used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux. -Laxative: Used to treat constipation by increasing water in the intestines.

Dosage

-As an Antacid: Typically 400 to 800 mg taken 1 to 2 hours after meals and at bedtime, not exceeding 4800 mg per day. -As a Laxative: 2 to 4 tablespoons (30-60 mL) taken once daily, preferably at bedtime.

Contra-Indications

-Renal Impairment: Use with caution or avoid if severe renal impairment is present. -Abdominal Pain: Should not be used if experiencing abdominal pain of unknown origin.

Special Precautions

-Pregnancy: Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy. -Interactions: Monitor for potential interactions with other medications, particularly those affecting kidney function.

Side Effects

-Common: Diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps. -Severe: Persistent or severe abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling).

Drug Interactions

-Antibiotics: May interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics. -Other Laxatives: May increase the risk of dehydration or electrolyte imbalance when used with other laxatives.
