Moclobemide

It is a reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).

Indications

Depression.


Dosage

Adults : Initially 300mg daily usually in divided doses after food. The dose needs to be adjusted according to response. The usual dosage range is 150 to 600mg daily. Children : Not recommended.


Contra-Indications

Acute confusional states, Phaeochromocytoma.


Special Precautions

Avoid in agitated or exicted patients, thyrotoxicosis. severe hepatic impairment.


Side Effects

Sleep disturbance, dizziness, nausea, headache, restlessness, agitation, confusional states. Rarely raised liver enzymes. Possible hyponatremia.


Drug Interactions

Analgesics : CNS excitation or depression (hypertension or hypotension) with codeine, pethidine and possibly fentanyl, morphine and other opioid analgesics. Effects of ibuprofen and possibly other NSAIDs enhanced.
