Montelukast

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that helps reduce inflammation and constriction in the airways. It is commonly used to manage asthma and allergy symptoms.

Indications

-Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma -Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction -Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis (both seasonal and perennial)

Dosage

-Adults and Adolescents (15 years and older): 10 mg once daily in the evening. -Pediatric Patients (6 to 14 years): 5 mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening. -Pediatric Patients (2 to 5 years): 4 mg chewable tablet or granules once daily in the evening. -Pediatric Patients (6 months to 2 years): 4 mg granules once daily in the evening.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to Montelukast or any of its components.

Special Precautions

-Not to be used for the reversal of acute bronchospasm. -Monitor for neuropsychiatric events such as agitation, aggression, hallucinations, depression, and suicidal thinking. -Use with caution in patients with phenylketonuria due to the presence of aspartame in the chewable tablets.

Side Effects

-Common: Headache, abdominal pain, cough, fever, and dyspepsia. -Serious: Neuropsychiatric events, including agitation, aggression, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and suicidal thoughts.

Drug Interactions

-Phenobarbital: May decrease the concentration of Montelukast. -Prednisone: Concomitant use does not appear to have adverse effects, but always monitor. -Other CYP450 inducers: May affect Montelukast levels and efficacy.
