Orciprenaline

Orciprenaline, also known as metaproterenol, is a bronchodilator medication that belongs to the class of drugs called beta-2 adrenergic agonists. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, which helps to improve breathing. Orciprenaline is a synthetic sympathomimetic amine that selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscles. It is available in various forms such as inhalation solutions and tablets. Orciprenaline is a bronchodilating agent, which acts on â2-adrenergic receptors.

Indications

-Orciprenaline is primarily indicated for the treatment of bronchospasm associated with conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It is used to relieve and prevent bronchial constriction, making it easier for individuals with respiratory conditions to breathe. -Bronchial asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Pulmonary emphysema. Orciprenaline sulphate is also useful in sarcoidosis, silicosis, carcinoma of the lung and tuberculosis when bronchospasm contributes to the disability.


Dosage

-Dosage may vary based on the specific formulation and the severity of the condition. Generally, it is administered as an inhalation solution or in tablet form. The dosage should be individualized, and patients should follow their healthcare provider's recommendations. -Oral; syrup 2mg per ml. Dose to be individualized, Adult Dosage: 20 mg (10 mL) t.i.d. or q.i.d. Pediatric Dosage: Ages 4-12: 10 mg (5 mL) t.i.d, Above 12 years : 20 mg (10 mL) t.i.d.


Contra-Indications

-Orciprenaline is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. It should be used with caution in patients with certain cardiovascular conditions, such as severe heart disease or arrhythmias. -HOCM, Cardiac arrhythmia.


Special Precautions

-Special precautions should be taken in patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or hypertension. Caution is advised in patients with a history of seizures. The drug should be used cautiously in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and the potential benefits should be weighed against potential risks. Paediatric: Data not sufficient. Pregnancy: Data not sufficient. Lactation: Data not sufficient. Elderly: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and other adult patients.


Side Effects

-Common side effects of orciprenaline may include tremors, headache, increased heart rate, palpitations, nausea, and nervousness. Serious side effects such as chest pain or irregular heartbeats should be reported to a healthcare provider promptly. -Shakes, nervousness, headache, dizziness, rapid or irregular heart beats.


Drug Interactions

-Orciprenaline may interact with other medications, including beta-blockers, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and other sympathomimetic drugs. Patients should inform their healthcare providers about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions. -Epinephrine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants.
