Oxiconazole Nitrate

It is a new antifungal imidazole with a broad antifungal spectrum including yeasts and dermatophytes in vitro. It is an imidazole derivative whose antifungal activity is derived primarily from the inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, which is critical for cellular membrane integrity.

Indications

Topical treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea(pityriasis) versicolor due to Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton tonsurans, Trichophyton violaceum or Malassezia furfur.


Dosage

Apply once to twice daily in patients with tinea pedis, tinea corporis, or tinea cruris. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris the possibility of recurrence.


Contra-Indications

Oxiconazole nitrate is contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to imidazole antifungal agents or any of the ingredients in the formulation.


Special Precautions

Patients should avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes while using oxiconazole nitrate. It is for external use only. If irritation or sensitivity develops, treatment should be discontinued, and a healthcare provider should be consulted.


Side Effects

Cream: Prutitus, burning, irritiation and allergic contact dermatitis, folliculitis, erythema and papules, fissure, maceration, rash, stinging and nodules. Lotion : Burning and stinging and prutitus, scaling, tingling, pain and dyshidrotic eczema.


Drug Interactions

There are no significant drug interactions reported with oxiconazole nitrate. However, it is advisable to inform the healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and herbal products being taken to avoid potential interactions.
