Paracetamol

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is a widely used over-the-counter analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It belongs to the class of medications called non-opioid analgesics. Paracetamol works by inhibiting the production of certain chemicals in the brain that are responsible for pain and fever.(Acetaminophen)Paracetamol is a valuable central analgesic but weak peripheral anti-inflammatory agent & exhibits good & prompt antipyretic action. It does not stimulate respiration, or alter acid base balance & causes less gastric irritation & have no effect on cellular metabolism or clotting factors. It is not uricosuric.

Indications

Paracetamol is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate pain and fever associated with various conditions, including headaches, musculoskeletal pain, toothaches, and colds.

Dosage

-The recommended dosage of paracetamol varies depending on age and weight. It is crucial to follow the instructions on the packaging or as directed by a healthcare professional. Avoid exceeding the maximum daily dose, as excessive intake may lead to liver damage. -0.5-1 gm upto 4 gm daily in divided doses.

Contra-Indications

Paracetamol is contraindicated in individuals with a known allergy to the drug. Patients with severe liver disease or a history of alcohol abuse should use paracetamol with caution, as excessive use may lead to hepatotoxicity.

Drug Interactions

-Certain medications, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and barbiturates, may interact with paracetamol. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. -Enhances oral anticoagulant activity. Absorption increased by metoclopramide. Absorption reduced by pethidine, propanthline. Alcohol (chronic use) potentiates hepatotoxicity by paracetamol.
