Pneumococcal vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccine is used for active immunisation against Strep. pneumoniae which is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia worldwide. It is prepared from purified penumococcal capsular antigens and includes 23 serotypes which are responsible for atleast 85% of pneumococcal infections and has greater than 90% coverage against serotypes that are penicillin resistant.

Indications

-Prevention of pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. -Recommended for children under 5 years, adults over 65 years, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, or respiratory conditions.


Dosage

-For children (under 2 years): Administered as a series of 4 doses, typically at 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months of age. -For adults 65 years and older: A single dose is usually recommended. -For individuals with chronic conditions: Follow the guidance of a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Individuals with a history of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of pneumococcal vaccine. -Persons with a known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine.


Special Precautions

-Consult a healthcare provider if the individual is immunocompromised or has a chronic illness. -May require adjustments for individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions or moderate to severe acute illness.


Side Effects

-Common: Mild fever, redness or swelling at the injection site, fatigue. -Rare: Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis; severe reactions are very uncommon.
