Potassium Guaiacolsulfonate

Potassium Guaiacolsulfonate is a mucolytic agent used to help relieve cough and congestion by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways.

Indications

-Acute and chronic bronchitis -Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) -Other respiratory conditions associated with excessive mucus production


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of oral solution 3 times a day, or as directed by a healthcare provider. -Children: Dosage should be determined by a healthcare provider based on age and weight.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to Potassium Guaiacolsulfonate or any of its components. -Severe Renal Impairment: Caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to possible accumulation.


Special Precautions

-Pregnancy and Lactation: Use during pregnancy and lactation should be assessed by a healthcare provider. -Renal Impairment: Adjust dosage in cases of renal impairment. -Gastrointestinal Issues: Use with caution in patients with gastrointestinal disorders.


Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset. -Rare: Allergic reactions, rash, difficulty breathing.


Drug Interactions

-Anticoagulants: May enhance the effects of anticoagulants; monitor INR levels if on such medications. -Other Mucolytics: Caution when used with other mucolytics or cough suppressants.
