PROGESTOGEN-ESTROGEN COMBINATION

It is indicated for the treatment of gynaecological disorders in which temporary suppression of ovarian function is desirable. If it is taken regularly, there will be no maturation of the follicles and no ovulation during the treated cycles. Its influence on the endometrium can also be put to therapeutic use and the length of the cycle is normalised.

Indications

ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES Dys- menorrhoea, endometriosis, irregularities of the cycle without organic cause (hypermenorrhoea, polymenorrhoea, intermentrual bleeding), intermenstrual pain (Mittelschmerz).


Dosage

1 Tablet daily from 5th to the 25th day of the cycle after meals. First day of bleeding is counted always as day 1 of the cycle.


Contra-Indications

Pregnancy, severe disturbances of liver function, jaundice or persistent itching during a previous pregnancy, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Rotor syndrome, liver tumours, throm- boembolic processes, sickle-cell anaemia, cancer of breast or endometrium, diabetes, herpes of pregnancy, oteosclerosis.


Special Precautions

Before starting, medical & gynaecological examination (including the breasts) should be carried out & pregnancy must be excluded. Cigarette smoking. Thromboembolic disorders. Pre-existing uterine leiomyomata may increase in size. Mental depression, fluid retention, cholestatic jaundice. Disturbed tryptophan metabolism. Lactation.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting. G.I. upset. Change in menstrual flow. Dysmenorrhea. Chlosma or melasma. Breast changes, weight gain. Cervical erosion or cervical secretion. Rash. Vaginal candidasis.


Drug Interactions

Decrease effect of tricyclic antidepressants, hypoglycaemic agents, anticoagulants. Rifampicin, barbiturates and phenytoin interfere with effects.
