Quiniodochlor

QUINIODO-CHLOR, DIIODOHYDROXYQUIN, BROXYQU-INOLINE. These are active against Entamoeba, Giardia, Trichomonas, some fungi (dermatophytes, candida) and some bacteria. They kill the cyst forming trophozoites in the intestine, but donot have tissue amoebicidal action. They are not very effective in acute amoebic dysentery but afford relief in chronic intestinal amoebiasis and are totally valueless in extra intestinal amoebiasis. Repeated and prolonged usage, which is irrational and may be harmful.

Indications

Infective diarrhoea; giardiasis; local treatment of monilial and trichomonas vaginitis, fungal and bacterial skin infections.


Dosage

Quiniodochlor: 250-500 mg three times daily. Diiodohydroxyquin: 650 mg. three times daily Broxyquinoline: 200-400 mg. three times daily.


Contra-Indications

Hepatic impairment, Hyper-thyroidism, iodine allergy.


Special Precautions

Relatively prolonged and uninterrupted treatment with halogenated hydroxyquinoline derivatives used in high dosage for more than 14 days has been reported to cause peripheral neuritis and damage to optic nerves in isolated cases.


Side Effects

Nausea, transient loose and green stools, pruritus, Goiter.
