Rizatriptan

It is a 5HT1 agonist.

Indications

Treatment of acute migraine attacks.

Dosage

Adults:10mg as soon as possible after onset of migraine; may be repeated after 2 hours if migraine recurs; patients not responding should not take second dose for same attack. Maximum 20mg in 24 hours. Children and upto 18 years : not recommended.

Contra-Indications

Previous cerebrovascular accident or transient ischaemic attack, peripheral vascular disease.

Special Precautions

Renal impairment. Not to be taken until 24 hours of stopping an ergotamine-like preparation.

Side Effects

Palpitation, dry mouth, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, headache, tremor, confusion, muscle weakness, drowsiness, tachycardia, pharyngeal, nervousness, vertigo.

Drug Interactions

Antibacterials, antidepressants, beta blockers, ergotamine.
