Sulbactam
Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that enhances the efficacy of beta-lactam antibiotics by preventing bacterial resistance mechanisms. It is commonly combined with other antibiotics such as ampicillin to treat a variety of bacterial infections.Sulbactam is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections such as: -Urinary tract infections -Respiratory tract infections -Skin and soft tissue infections -Intra-abdominal infections -Gynecological infections -Sepsis
-Adults: 1.5 to 3 grams every 6 to 8 hours -Children: 25 to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 to 8 hours
-Hypersensitivity to Sulbactam or any other beta-lactam antibiotic -Severe renal impairment without appropriate dose adjustment
-Monitor for signs of an allergic reaction, particularly in patients with a history of penicillin allergy -Adjust dosage in patients with renal impairment -Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis
Common side effects of Sulbactam may include: -Diarrhea -Nausea and vomiting -Rash -Pain and inflammation at the injection site -Increased liver enzymes
-Concurrent use with probenecid may increase and prolong Sulbactam levels -May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives -Interactions with other antibiotics should be monitored to avoid antagonism
