TAZOBACTAM
Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor used in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics to enhance their efficacy. It works by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby preventing the degradation of beta-lactam antibiotics.-Treatment of infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. -Often used in combination with piperacillin to treat a variety of infections including skin, abdominal, and urinary tract infections, as well as pneumonia.
-The typical dosage for adults when combined with piperacillin is 3.375 g (3 g of piperacillin and 0.375 g of tazobactam) every 6 hours. -Dosage may vary based on the type and severity of the infection, renal function, and patient response.
-Hypersensitivity to tazobactam, piperacillin, or any beta-lactam antibiotics. -Severe renal impairment without appropriate dosage adjustment.
-Monitor renal function in patients with renal impairment. -Caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to beta-lactams. -Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
-Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and local reactions at the injection site. -Serious: Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and hematologic effects such as thrombocytopenia.
-Aminoglycosides: Risk of nephrotoxicity may be increased when used concurrently. -Probenecid: Can increase the levels of tazobactam and prolong its effects. -Anticoagulants: Enhanced anticoagulant effect when used with warfarin or heparin.
