Terbutaline
Terbutaline is a bronchodilator medication that belongs to the class of beta-agonists. It acts by relaxing the muscles in the airways and increasing airflow to the lungs.Terbutaline is primarily used to treat asthma, bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also used to prevent and treat premature labor.
The dosage of terbutaline can vary depending on the condition being treated and the patient's response. It is typically administered via inhalation (metered-dose inhalers or nebulizers), orally (tablets), or intravenously (injection). Specific dosages should be determined by a healthcare provider.
Terbutaline is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to terbutaline or other beta-agonists.
Use caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders (such as heart disease or hypertension), hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and in pregnant women. Close monitoring is recommended during use.
Common side effects of terbutaline include tremors, headache, palpitations, muscle cramps, nervousness, and nausea. Less common but serious side effects may include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and paradoxical bronchospasm (worsening of breathing difficulties).
Terbutaline may interact with other medications such as beta-blockers, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and diuretics. It is important to inform healthcare providers about all medications being taken.
