Tolterodine l-Tartrate

It is a selective muscarinic receptor antagonist which effectively relieves the frequency, urgency and urge incontinence of over active bladder. It has a superior tolerability profile. Since it is selective for the bladder over salivary glands it is less apt to cause dry mouth.

Indications

Indicated for the treatment of over active bladder with symptoms of urinary frequency and urgency with or without urge incontinence.


Dosage

The recommended dose is 2mg bid. In hepatic or renal impairment and those receiving P450 3A4 inhibitors, the recommended dose is 1mg bid. In case of trouble some side effects, dose may be reduced from 2 mg to 1mg bid.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to the drug or its ingredients, urinary retention, gastric retention or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.


Special Precautions

In patients with clinically significant bladder out flow obstruction, pyloric stenosis, narrow-angle glucoma, in hepatic or renal impairment.


Side Effects

Dry mouth, constipation, vertigo/dizziness, abdominal pain, abnormal vision, urinary retention, xerophthalmia.


Drug Interactions

No significant interactions with warfarin, oral contraceptives, diuretics, tricyclic antidepressants, flecainide, vinblastine and carbamazepine. But patients receiving cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors (erythromycin, ketoconazole, miconazole etc.) should not receive more than 1mg bid.
