VERDENAFIL

VERDENAFIL

Vardenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, thus enabling an erection. Vardenafil is available in oral tablet form and is commonly marketed under the brand name Levitra.

Indications

Vardenafil is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. It is used to improve the ability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity.

Dosage

The typical starting dose of vardenafil is 10 mg, taken orally as needed, approximately 60 minutes before sexual activity. The dose may be adjusted based on individual response and tolerability, with a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg per day. Vardenafil should not be taken more than once a day.

Contra-Indications

Vardenafil is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should not be used in patients who are concurrently taking nitrates or nitric oxide donors, as this combination can lead to a sudden and significant decrease in blood pressure.

Special Precautions

Special precautions should be taken when using vardenafil in patients with certain medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, liver or kidney impairment, bleeding disorders, and anatomical deformation of the penis. Caution is also advised in individuals with a history of priapism (prolonged erection) or sudden vision loss.

Side Effects

Common side effects of vardenafil may include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, and dizziness. Less common but more serious side effects may include priapism (painful erection lasting longer than four hours), sudden vision loss, and hearing loss. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any of these adverse effects.

Drug Interactions

Vardenafil may interact with certain medications, particularly nitrates, alpha-blockers, antifungal drugs, antibiotics, and HIV protease inhibitors. Concomitant use of these drugs with vardenafil can increase the risk of adverse effects or decrease the effectiveness of the medication. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medications they are taking before starting vardenafil.
