Zonisamide

Zonisamide is an antiepileptic drug (AED) used to treat epilepsy and seizure disorders. It works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain, thereby reducing the occurrence of seizures.

Indications

-Partial seizures (including complex partial seizures) -Generalized tonic-clonic seizures -Mixed seizure types associated with epilepsy


Dosage

Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients below the age of 16 have not been established. Once or twice daily, using 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg capsules. Capsules should be swallowed whole.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to zonisamide or any components of the formulation -Patients with a history of sulfonamide allergy -Use in patients with kidney impairment or metabolic acidosis may require dose adjustment or monitoring


Special Precautions

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur : weight loss, tingling/numbness of hands/feet/mouth, leg cramps, joint pain/stiffness, muscle ache/cramps, decreased sexual interest/ability, side/abdominal pain, blood in the urine, inability to urinate. Anxiety, agitation, hostility, pressured/rapid speech, or thoughts of suicide.


Side Effects

Somnolence, anorexia, dizziness, headache, nausea and agitation/irritability.


Drug Interactions

-Zonisamide may interact with other AEDs and medications metabolized by hepatic enzymes -Inform healthcare providers about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements
