Doctors perform complex surgery to save life of a Jharkhand man
A 43-year-old man from Jharkhand, suffering from chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), got a new lease of life after surgeons from Kolkata performed a complex surgery.
The treating doctors said that patient from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand was suffering from severe and long-standing pain related to chronic pancreatitis for over ten years.
The long-standing chronic pancreatitis resulted in the blocking of the main blood vessels that supply blood to the spleen and the liver, which was causing him severe pain.
Talking to Drug Today Medical Times, Dr Sanjoy Mandal, Consultant Surgeon at AMRI Mukundapur, said, “Due to chronic pancreatitis, the main blood vessels that supply blood to his spleen and liver got thrombosed (blocked), causing frequent pain and vomiting blood.”
“The patient had also developed a large cyst that was adding to his pain,” he added.
Dr Mandal further explained that the patient had diabetes due to chronic pancreatitis, adding, “Heavy pain medications did not provide pain relief, and his condition continued to worsen.”
The patient had developed bypass channels for blood flow around his pancreas which made any surgical intervention extremely risky, Dr Mandal said.
The patient had a cyst, which was also drained into the intestine during surgery, he added.
A complex surgery was performed on the patient during which, his spleen was removed and Frey's procedure was performed on his pancreas, during which where the head of the pancreas is cored out, the pancreatic duct is laid open and it is bypassed to the intestine.
Dr Mandal stated that after the surgery, the blood sugar level of the patient improved considerably, and currently, he is recovering after being discharged.
