Delhi hospital witnessing spike in Viral fever, typhoid, dengue, and COVID-19
Delhi’s Indian Spinal Injuries Centre is witnessing a large number of fever cases in emergency rooms and OPD.
"Both our emergency and OPD are witnessing a large number of patients with high fever. These were all suspected cases of viral fever, typhoid, dengue, and COVID-19, Dr. Rajkumar, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, said.
"In our hospital, we have 10–15 cases of dengue on the basis of symptoms and investigations like platelet count and NS1, and similarly, 3–4 cases of Typhoid. Presently, quantifying COVID-19 cases is challenging due to a lack of testing. During the rainy season, fever due to dengue and typhoid is not uncommon. Overall, the situation is not alarming; however, people should take all precautions," he added.
Dr. Rajkumar explained that Delhi recently witnessed heavy rainfall, and these Monsoon showers can be attributed to the rise in cases of waterborne diseases such as typhoid and vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.
"Moreover, people have forgotten that COVID-19 is not yet over and a new variant is around us. Since testing and genome sequencing have taken a back seat, it would not be an exaggeration to say that a large number of people with high fevers and respiratory-related issues can be suspected cases of COVID-19," he added.
"Given the initial symptom overlap, a meticulous approach involving comprehensive diagnostic tests and medical assessments is undertaken to precisely identify the fever's origin. Tailored treatments and necessary precautions are then administered based on these test results.
For those experiencing a high fever, vigilant symptom tracking is paramount. Seeking immediate medical attention for worsening symptoms, breathing difficulties, persistent pain, or severe manifestations is advised," Dr. Rajkumar suggested.
