Jan Aushadhi Kendras saved people 2.5K Crore each year: Chemicals Ministry
In a significant milestone, the Jan Aushadhi Kendras under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) have contributed to saving a substantial Rs. 23,000 crore for citizens over the past nine years, a net savings of over 2,555 crores each year data released by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers reveal.
During a visit to the 42nd India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, commended the efforts of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in making affordable and high-quality medicines accessible throughout the country.
"In the financial year 2022-23, PMBI has sold Jan Aushadhi Medicines worth Rs. 1,236 crore, resulting in savings of approximately Rs. 7,416 crore to the citizens," the ministry stated.
The number of Kendras has grown from 80 in 2014 to a staggering 9,998 in almost all districts across the country, the statement added.

The PMBJP scheme, which facilitates the opening of dedicated outlets known as Janaushadhi Kendras, aims to provide generic medicines at significantly reduced prices.
According to the ministry, as of October 31, 2023, 9,998 Janaushadhi Kendras are functional, offering 1,965 drugs and 293 surgical equipment at 50% to 90% lower prices than branded medicines.
“PMBJP has drastically brought down the prices of more than 1,965 quality medicines, making these medicines available within the reach of a large section of the population, especially the poor and patients with chronic diseases,” the ministry emphasised.
Pointing out that over the past nine years, the PMBJP scheme has witnessed a remarkable growth of 100 times in the number of Kendras and an impressive 170 times increase in sales. The ministry highlighted that the total savings of approximately Rs. 23,000 crore for citizens have been made possible through this noble initiative.
