Mumbai Doctors Carry Out Bilateral Hand Transplant
In a landmark achievement for Indian medical science, a 32-year-old man from Ujjain underwent a pioneering bilateral hand transplant at Global Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai, on February 9, 2024.
Led by Dr. Nilesh Satbhai, the Head of Department for Plastic, Hand, Reconstructive Microsurgery, and Transplantation, the surgery marked a significant milestone, lasting over 12 hours and demonstrating the hospital's commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation.
The patient, Jeevesh Kushwah, a mechanical engineer from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, encountered a life-altering accident three years ago in December 2020. A high-voltage electric shock sustained while working in a steel fabrication factory resulted in severe electric burns on both his arms and legs, necessitating immediate medical attention. Despite the best efforts of doctors in Indore, his right leg and both hands faced amputation to ensure survival. Although he adapted to an artificial right leg, the artificial hands proved inadequate for daily tasks, leaving him reliant on assistance from his brothers.
Driven by a relentless spirit and a quest for independence, Jeevesh sought hope at Global Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai. After initial consultations in June 2022, Dr. Satbhai and his team evaluated the feasibility of a bilateral hand transplant. Encouraged by Jeevesh's determination, the decision to proceed was made. Remarkably, within a month of registration, suitable donor hands became available, paving the way for the intricate surgical procedure.
Dr. Satbhai shed light on the complexities of the surgery, citing unique challenges stemming from severe scarring and the necessity for meticulous recipient and donor preparations. The coordination between teams, spanning from Surat to Mumbai, was paramount, ensuring a seamless transition for both the donor and recipient. Following the extensive surgery, Jeevesh embarked on a path to recovery, with expectations of regaining hand function over the next several months.
For Jeevesh, the transplant signifies far more than a surgical procedure; it represents a restoration of dignity, independence, and hope. Expressing gratitude to Dr. Satbhai and the donor family, he spoke of reclaiming the everyday tasks that once seemed insurmountable, fueling aspirations to pursue long-dormant dreams.
Echoing sentiments of gratitude and hope, Jeevesh's brother, Manoj Kushwah, praised Global Hospitals for providing a lifeline to his sibling, ushering in a new chapter of possibilities and opportunities.
Dr. Vivek Talaulikar, COO of IHH Healthcare India, hailed the successful hand transplant as a beacon of hope, underscoring the transformative impact of organ donation on reshaping lives. The achievement underscores the pivotal role of advanced medical technology and surgical expertise in extending the boundaries of possibility and restoring the quality of life for patients in need.
