Wadia Hospital Saves Two-Month-Old's Forearm From Amputation in Complex Surgery

In a remarkable feat of medical expertise and dedication, Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children has successfully conducted a series of intricate surgeries to save the forearm of a two-month-old girl from Nepal, preventing the need for amputation. The child, who developed severe cellulitis in her left forearm shortly after birth, faced the prospect of losing her limb due to necrosis (gangrene) of the skin. However, timely intervention by Dr. Nilesh Satbhai, Consultant Plastic, Hand, and Reconstructive Microsurgeon, and his team ensured the child's stability and the preservation of her hand.

The newborn girl, born in Nepal to parents with a history of pregnancy complications, was diagnosed with severe cellulitis leading to skin necrosis on her left forearm. Despite being recommended amputation at a hospital in Kathmandu, her parents sought further treatment at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital in Mumbai. Dr. Satbhai, upon the child's arrival, admitted her to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for resuscitation, stabilizing her condition through intensive medical management.

Explaining the severity of cellulitis, Dr. Satbhai highlighted its potential to escalate into necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease that can lead to tissue death and gangrene if left untreated. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Satbhai and his team swiftly devised a comprehensive treatment plan involving multiple stages of surgery to clean the wounds, remove dead tissues, and reduce the source of infection.

The surgery, conducted over five weeks, involved meticulous wound debridement, multiple wound washes, and the application of a large abdominal flap to cover the majority of the forearm wound. Anesthesia management during the procedure was particularly challenging due to the child's age and critical condition. The successful outcome of the surgery has not only salvaged the child's limb but also ensured her stability and normal developmental milestones.

Dr. Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO of Wadia Hospital, praised the expertise and dedication of the surgical team, emphasizing the hospital's commitment to leveraging advanced technology and techniques to overcome seemingly insurmountable medical challenges.

Echoing sentiments of gratitude, the child's father, Mr. Abdul Awwal, expressed profound appreciation for Dr. Satbhai's skillful intervention, which spared his daughter from a lifetime of disability. He credited Wadia Hospital for instilling hope and resilience in their journey toward saving their child's forearm from amputation, expressing joy at the prospect of naming their daughter 'Tamannah.'

The successful outcome of this complex surgery at Wadia Hospital serves as a testament to the institution's unwavering commitment to excellence in pediatric care and its ability to offer life-changing solutions to patients facing critical medical conditions.
