Groundbreaking Robotic Surgery: A Milestone in Complex Medical Care
Prof Dr Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC), achieved a remarkable feat by performing two distinct surgeries on a woman in a single operation using robotics. The patient, a 45-year-old resident of Malegaon, faced the dual challenge of left kidney cancer and multiple large uterine fibroids, alongside other health issues like high BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory problems.
Undeterred by the complexities, Dr Nagarkar orchestrated a swift and efficient three-hour procedure, conducting both a nephrectomy (kidney removal) and a hysterectomy (uterus removal) utilizing the innovative Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) technique. This groundbreaking approach minimized surgical trauma and maximized precision, enabling the patient to walk independently just six hours after the surgery, marking a significant advancement in managing complex medical conditions.
Dr Raj Nagarkar, Managing Director & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services at HCGMCC & Hospitals, emphasizes the team's innovative approach in tackling the patient's health challenges. Through advanced dual surgery techniques and robotic technology, they executed a rapid procedure, providing a comprehensive solution to the patient's health concerns while minimizing surgical trauma.
The patient's unique case, with a BMI over 100 kg and various health risks, necessitated careful consideration and specialized treatment. Persistent abdominal pain and irregular menstrual cycles led to the discovery of kidney cancer and multiple large uterine fibroids. With the successful application of the NOTES technique, Dr Nagarkar and his team mitigated risks and provided effective treatment despite the patient's comorbidities.
The transformative potential of robotic-assisted natural orifice surgery in addressing complex medical conditions is evident in this successful outcome. HCGMCC continues to pioneer cutting-edge treatments, offering hope and healing to patients facing challenging health issues.
The benefits of the NOTES approach were manifold, with minimal scarring, reduced risk of bleeding and infection, and a quick recovery period. The patient's ability to resume normal activities within hours post-surgery highlights the effectiveness of this innovative approach in select patient populations.
Dr Nagarkar's pioneering work exemplifies the commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation and improving patient outcomes, setting a new standard in complex surgical care.
