UNEP urges Global Action to Combat Food Waste and Climate Change

A recent report is calling for urgent action to address the pressing issue of food waste and its impact on climate change. The Food Waste Index Report empFood Waste Index Report emphasizes the need to tackle food waste both on an individual level and within larger systems.

Countries like Japan and the UK are setting examples by implementing robust policies and partnerships, leading to significant reductions in food waste. Japan has achieved a remarkable 31% reduction, while the UK has seen an 18% decrease. These successes highlight the potential for change on a larger scale.

Harriet Lamb, CEO of WRAP, emphasized the importance of coordinated action to combat the environmental, social, and economic costs of food waste. She stressed the need for greater collaboration across continents and supply chains. Lamb expressed support for the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) call for more G20 countries to measure food waste and work towards Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve food waste by 2030. Lamb emphasized the critical role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in achieving this goal. These partnerships involve cooperation between the public sector, private sector, and non-governmental organizations to identify bottlenecks, develop solutions, and drive progress. Lamb highlighted the importance of support from philanthropic, business, and governmental actors to ensure the success of these programs.

Commenting on the findings, UNEP said that it is actively tracking country-level progress towards reducing food waste, with a focus on implementing solutions beyond measurement. One such solution is the systemic action through PPPs. These partnerships are vital for delivering reductions in food waste from farm to fork, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and alleviating water stress. Proper financing can enable PPPs to share best practices, encourage innovation, and drive long-term, holistic change.

PPPs focused on food loss and waste are gaining traction worldwide, with initiatives in countries like Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, and the UK showing promising results. In the UK alone, PPPs have helped reduce household food waste by over a quarter per capita from 2007 to 2018.

In conclusion, the report underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat food waste and its detrimental effects on the environment, society, and economies. Organizations like UNEP and WRAP are leading efforts to inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life while safeguarding the planet for future generations.
